Thailand accelerates fight against human trafficking

Bangkok (VNA) – Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Prawit Wongsuwan has affirmed that the Government will promote measures against human trafficking in the context that the US and the EU are stressing the issue in Thailand.

Defence ministry spokesman Kongcheep Tantravanich said that relevant agencies have been ordered to bolster inspections and prosecution against people involving in human trafficking rife.

The Fisheries Department must complete case files of suspected officials who have close connection with human trafficking while the Marine Department is required to make an inventory of fishing vessels operating in Thai waters.

The Department of Employment is directed to fulfill registration for migrant workers in the fisheries sector by March, 2018. The Department of Labour Protection and Welfare must join hands with the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security to ensure justice for labourers and keep a close watch on salary payment.

The Defence Ministry said that non-governmental organisations are allowed to support the Government in vocational training, providing hotline service, providing analysis of data.

Any official who is heedless or has close connection with corruption will be prosecuted.-VNA
