The Thai army will begin withdrawing troops from the southernmost region in April, Thailand’s supreme commander Gen. Worapong Sanganetr said on March 2.
Speaking after a meeting with commanders of the three armed forces of the North, Central and Northeast regions, Gen Worapong said the withdrawal will be carried out according to plans.
At present, the government of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha plans to negotiate with insurgent groups operating in the three southern provinces.
Thailand’s southernmost region, including three border provinces and four districts of Songkhla province, has experienced unstable condition due to continuous violence since January 2004.
According to statistics of Thailand’s army, violence in the country’s southern areas has caused over 6,000 deaths and injured 10,600 people over the past decade.-VNA
