Bangkok (VNA) – Revenue from products with geographical indications (GI) of Thailand this year is projected to stand at 4 billion baht (about 123 million USD), said the country’s Ministry of Commerce.

GI is a name or symbol used on products which have a specific geographical location or origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are related to that origin.

The Department of Intellectual Property under the Thai Ministry of Commerce has issued GI certifications for 99 products across 66 localities, with Sarika durian the newest one awaiting approval.

The Ministry of Commerce will work to push the registration of GI products in all 77 provinces of the country next year.

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha previously voiced his hope to have all localities to establish their own GI products so as to attract international visitors.

Besides, there are currently 16 foreign GI products in Thailand, mainly of countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) such as Kampot pepper of Cambodia and Bolaven coffee of Laos.

Products from other nations, including grape of California, the US, Chile’s Pisco Brandy, Italian Grana Padano and Asiago cheese, and Kobe beef of Japan are waiting for approval.-VNA
