Hanoi (VNA) – Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha confirmed there is no trade between Thailand and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on December 12.
He made the statement ahead of the visit by US Special Representative for North Korea Policy Joseph Yun to Thailand seeking to intensify pressure on the DPRK over its weapon programmes.
Thailand guarantees to have abided by the United Nations resolutions, he told reporters at the Government House, rejecting reports about boats from the DPRK in Thai waters.
During a visit to Bangkok in August, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson pressed Thailand, the US’s long-standing ally in Asia, to act more on the DPRK. The US believed the DPRK has active companies in Thailand, urging its ally to close them.
The Thai Foreign Ministry said trade with the DPRK has declined by 94 percent from the previous year.
Envoy Joseph Yun is scheduled to visit Bangkok this week to discuss with the local governments about how to step up pressure on the DPRK as tension increases over its development of nuclear weapons and missiles in defiance of UN resolutions and sanctions.-VNA
