Thailand was elected as Chair of the group of 77 developing nations (G-77), the largest intergovernmental organisation of the United Nations’ developing country members.

Thai Ambassador to France Apichart Chinwanno, who will be the Thai Foreign Ministry’s permanent secretary next month, said with the position, Bangkok will play a leading role in promoting the implementation of new sustainable development goals to be approved at the Sustainable Development Summit 2015.

He stressed that Thailand will not only bolster South-South cooperation among developing countries but also serve as a bridge among G-77 members and with other UN member states.

Thailand is campaigning for a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) seat for the 2017-2018 term.

Thailand is one of the founding members of the G-77, which was formed in 1964 by 77 developing countries, but the group’s members have since expanded to 134.

The G-77 serves as a platform for developing countries to build their economic cooperation and development.-VNA
