Thailand ’s rice exports may surge to around 8 - 10 million tons in 2014, the director- general of the Department of Foreign Trade has said.
Oryza.com, a leading site for global rice news, research and analysis, cited the official as saying that rice exports by Thailand in 2013 are expected to decline to around 6.68 million tons, down about 16 percent from the targeted 8 – 8.5 million tons.
However, the official said, interest in Thai rice is growing due to low prices and demand among rice importers is also likely to increase next year due to weather disturbances in 2013.
Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry says that the Thai government has sufficient funds to pay farmers under the rice mortgage program and delayed payments will be done by January 15, 2014.
According to the ministry, the government will spend up to 90 billion baht (about 2.75 billion USD) to pay farmers in the 2013-14 rice mortgage programme on January 15, 2014.-VNA
