The Thai government has announced it will extend the state of emergency in Bangkok and three nearby provinces for another three months.

The state of emergency will affect Bangkok and the provinces of Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan from October 5, said government spokesman Suphachai Jaismut.

The decree, which was introduced in the capital in early April in response to mass anti-government rallies by the "Red Shirt" movement, bans public gatherings of more than five people and gives security forces the right to detain suspects for up to 30 days without charge./.
