Hanoi (VNA) – Thailand reached its rice exporttarget by shipping 11.13 million tonnes worth 5.62 billion USD abroad in 2018,according to the country’s Ministry of Commerce.
The Thai government forecast rice exports willdrop slightly to 10 million tonnes this year.
The ministry’s Foreign Trade Department said itwill strive to increase export value and encourage farmers to grow quality and indemand varieties.
It noted that the global economic slowdown couldaffect purchasing power, which could make cheaper rice from other countriesmore attractive.
However, Director General of the Foreign TradeDepartment Adul Chotinisakorn said he believes the quality and price of Thairice will allow it to remain competitive in global markets.
He added his department will launch marketingcampaigns in major Asian markets in 2019, particularly Hong Kong (China),Singapore, China, the Philippines and Indonesia.-VNA
