Thailand’s military chiefs have agreed to a weekend meeting with Suthep Thaugsuban, leader of the movement seeking to overthrow Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.
In a statement on late December 12, the Thai armed force said it had invited Suthep to join the leaders of the army, navy and air force at a seminar on December 14 "to find a way out for Thailand ".
Supreme Commander of Thailand ’s armed forces Thanasak Patimaprakorn will be the mediator and other "stakeholders" will join, it said.
Earlier the same day, army spokesman said Supreme Commander Thanasak Patimaprakorn had rejected Suthep's demand for a meeting.
The reason for this sudden change remains unclear.
In another development, Suthep on December 12 announced that he would do everything to stop the election slated for February next year and go on with his plan to set up a people’s council.
Earlier, Thai Foreign Ministry invited diplomatic delegations from the ASEAN countries to brief on the country’s situation and called on their supports for the upcoming election.
The ministry will also hold similar sessions with the UK , the US and France.-VNA
