Bangkok (VNA) – The development of hydropower projects on the mainstream Mekong River will cause great impact on water security, especially in countries in the lower basin.
The ideas were agreed by almost all participants at an international seminar boosting sustainable use of water resources of the Mekong River, which was held by the Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University in Thailand’s Sakon Nakhon province on October 31.
Delegates, who are experts, scholars and managers from Thailand and Vietnam, delivered speeches and shared the outcomes of their studies related to the use of Mekong River’s water, including impact of climate change on the Mekong Delta, basic principles in utilising Mekong River’s water, and consequences of oriented development on Mekong River, and hydropower dams on the river and alternative energy.
They stressed the need to intensify cooperation mechanism in the Mekong River Commission (MRC) and coordination between nations in the Mekong River basin in responding to climate change.
This was the first time the Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University had hosted a large-scale conference on the Mekong River.
The event looked to create a new and multi-dimensional view on environmental security challenges caused by climate change and development projects in the upper reaches.
It also aimed at improving awareness of negative impact of climate change and the unsustainable use of Mekong River water, boosting communications on the environmental issue in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, and enhancing knowledge about water-related challenges facing the region in the time to come.-VNA
