Bangkok (VNA/NNT) – The Thai Ministry of Labour will intensify action against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing after a signing cooperation agreement with the European Union (EU) and International Labor Organisation (ILO).

Labour Minister Gen Sirichai Distakul disclosed the information after opening the “Combating Unacceptable Forms of Work in the Thai Fishing and Seafood Industry” press event, where the ministry signed the agreement.

He said his ministry is ready to work against illegal fishing practices both domestically and with international assistance. Under the agreement, the ministry will work with the EU and ILO to elevate Thailand’s laws pertaining to fishing and labour to international standards and ensure fair treatment of workers in the fisheries sector.

Gen Sirichai expressed his belief that the new collaboration will lead to tangible results in preventing and remedying IUU fishing and labor issues.

EU Ambassador to Thailand Jesus-Miguel Sanz stated that the EU acknowledges Thailand’s genuine intention to solve its IUU fishing and labour problems. He said the cooperation will help engage all parties involved, from employers and employees to industry heads, in the matter.-VNA

Thailand’s business activity shows signs of gradual recovery
