Bangkok (VNA) – Spokesperson of the Thai Government Sansern Kaewkamnerd has warned that foreign labourers without work permit and visa will face legal action.
Nearly 60,000 migrant workers have had their status rendered as illegal and are no longer allowed to stay in Thailand after they missed the March 31 deadline for registration under the new labour law, reported Bangkok Post newspaper.
Authorities say 1,379,252 migrant workers from Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos applied for registration with the ministry's one-stop service (OSS) centres nationwide on the last day of registration. Of them, 96 percent were able to legally register, said Labour Minister Adul Sangsingkeo.
The status of the remaining unregistered 59,217 migrant workers has now been rendered as illegal as of April 1.
They now are not permitted to stay in Thailand and must return to their home countries or face legal action, Pol Gen Adul said.
Under the new labour law, illegal foreign workers will be fined 3,000 USD and sentenced to five-year imprisonment, while those who employ illegal workers will be fined 24,000 USD.-VNA
