Thailand and Myanmar are discussing the framework for a new electricity purchase contract between the two countries in which the former will buy 10,000 MW of power from the latter, the Energy Ministry of Thailand has said.
Thai Energy Minister Pongsak Ruktapongpisal said the country plans to purchase 1,000 MW from Myanmar 's My Tong Hydropower Project and 3,000 MW from another power plant, coal-fired, at Dawei.
The power purchase agreement will benefit the economic development projects of both countries as demand for cost-efficient power generation rises in line with economic prosperity.
Both hydro and coal power plants have low investment, however, the plan will require Thai Parliament's approval in accordance with Article 190 of the Thai Constitution.
The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding (RATCH) are investment partners in the two Myanmar power plants covered by the plan.-VNA
