The Thai Ministry of Commerce has asked relevant units to re-check the quality of rice in hopes to restore confidence following the allegation that Thai rice is contaminated.

After the Foundation for Consumers reported that more than 34 out of 46 brands of packaged rice sold in the market were contaminated, Deputy Minister of Commerce Nattawut Saikua said coordination will be made with relevant agencies for the re-evaluation of rice quality in a bid to ensure accuracy of the data.

There will also be disclosures of information about the units that assessed the rice quality and the amount of contamination found, he added.

The deputy minister stressed that negative news about Thai rice should not be made a political issue.

Nattawut also denied the report that more than 700,000 tonnes of rice from the neighbouring countries have been smuggled into Thailand for the rice pledging scheme, saying the government had stringent control measures in place.-VNA/NNT
