Co-chaired by Thai Minister of ForeignAffairs Kasit Piromya and visiting UnderSecretary for Political Affairsof the US Department of State, William J. Burns, the Thai-U.S. StrategicDialogue discussed various issues of mutual interest aimed at enhancingand deepening the bilateral 177-years-old relations.
The Thai officials reaffirmed the determination to move forward as ademocratic society, while the US side appreciated the ThaiGovernment’s efforts and expressed confidence that Thailand will beable to resolve the current political situation peacefully and throughdemocratic means.
On regional and global issues,discussion was made on the situation in the Southeast Asian and EastAsian regions, as well as on ASEAN and the issue within the framework ofthe United Nations.
Peacekeeping and disaster reliefoperation were among the possible areas of further cooperation.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva told Burns that a generalelection is possible from early next year if progress will be made onreconciliation and reform plans, according to PM’s secretary-generalPanitan Wattanayagorn.
Speaking later to the media,the Thai PM said his government wanted to see political stability andpeace first. Burns said the US hopes that the Thai government couldlift the state of emergency in Bangkok and 18 other provinces assoon as possible.
This Strategic Dialogue was thethird dialogue between Thailand and the US . The last dialogue washeld in Washington , D.C. in 2008./.
