Do Thi Thao, Vietnam’s sole representative at the first meeting of the Asian Grand Prix in Bangkok, won silver in the women’s 800m event last weekend.
Thao defeated strong rivals from Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in the final to finish second with a time of 2:07.60, just behind Rubiko Kubo from Japan, who took the gold medal in 2:07.41.
This is the first time Thao has won the continental medal.
Earlier, she bagged a bronze medal at the 25th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Laos, and also brought home a silver medal at the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia.
The second leg of the tournament will be in Chonburi, Thailand, on May 8, and finish in Colombo, Sri Lanka on May 12.-VNA
