At the conference (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – The third Indian Ocean Conference wrapped up in Hanoi on August 28 having reached an agreeable common perception of building a region of peace, stability, and prosperity.
Addressing the two-day event, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh highlighted the significance of building regional architecture.
He emphasised the importance of connecting the Indian Ocean with the Pacific Ocean, adding that the desire for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region has become stronger given a number of challenges.
He underlined the principle of building inclusive, rule-based regional framework with the central role of ASEAN on the basis of respecting independence and sovereignty, mutual trust, and win-win benefits.
During the ministerial and senior level exchanges, delegates shared their viewpoints on the opportunities, challenges, and visions while building regional security architecture.
Many affirmed the crucial role of Vietnam in the region and said it was proper time for the country to host the third Indian Ocean Conference.
They also shared concerns over regional security matters, including marine ones.
Participants underlined the importance of respect for international law without using force so as to peacefully address disputes.
Representatives from developing countries suggested creating an equal competitive playground and called on nations to respect one another and provide mutual support to promote peace, security, cooperation, and stability in the region.
Themed “Building Regional Architecture”, the conference attracted nearly 300 delegates from 40 countries and territories.–VNA
