Riots in the UK over the past four days did not cause great economic damages to the Vietnamese community in the country.

The situation had returned to normal in Hackney in the east and Lewisham and Peckham in the south where many Vietnamese lived.

Tang Minh Xuan, the owner of a Vietnamese supermarket in Mare Street, Hackney, said she closed her shop when she heard news that a number of youths were attacking a number of places in London and riots would spread to the region.

She said she was worried when witnessing such instability for the first time in the country.

The staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK closely monitored the riots and maintained contact with the Overseas Vietnamese Association and the Vietnamese Students Association in the UK.

They warned Vietnamese people not to go out at night, to only go to locations frequented by immigrants and contact the embassy if they needed help.

No Vietnamese person was killed in the riots and Vietnamese students in London and localities where riots broke out remained safe.

Peace returned to London on the fourth day, August 9, but the situation had worsened in Manchester, Salford, Wolverhampton and Birmingham cities./.
