The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia ( ECCC ) resumed a hearing against two ex-Khmer Rouge leaders in Phnom Penh on October 17.

Noun Chea, 88, and Khieu Samphan, 83, were accused of murdering the Vietnamese and Muslim Cham, and forcing marriages and rape during their rule from 1975 to 1979.

The hearing is the second against them. The first case concluded in August. They were convicted and sentenced to life in prison for crimes against humanity. They appealed to the decision.

Statistics showed that the numbers of the Muslim Cham and Vietnamese killed during the Khmer Rouge regime were estimated between 100,000 and 400,000, and about 20,000, respectively.

The UN-backed tribunal was established in 2006 to ask justice for the Khmer Rouge’s victims in Cambodia.

At its first trial in 2010, the tribunal gave life sentence to Kaing Guek Eav, known as Duch, who headed the notorious S-21 prison, with the charges of war crime and crimes against humanity.-VNA
