Three out of five undersea cables connecting Vietnam with the world encountered problems as of June 15, slowing down the internet speed across the country, according to local internet service providers.
Vietnam's international fibre optic cable system should have at least ten new undersea cables by 2030, bringing the country's undersea routes to at least 15.
The problems found in Branch S1I of the America Asia Gateway (AAG) undersea cable have been fixed, restoring the internet data connection between Vietnam and Hong Kong (China), Department of Telecommunications under the Ministry of Information and Communications announced on May 24.
Repair has been finished on two of the five broken undersea cables linking Vietnam with the world, namely Intra Asia (IA) and SMW3, according to the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC).
The SMW3 cable, the last fully functional Internet cable of Vietnam, has encountered a problem on its S2.7 segment that connects with Singapore, an Internet service provider in the country said on February 21.
With repair work on some international undersea cables now underway, Vietnam’s internet connection with the world is expected to be fully restored on February 24.
Internet speed in Vietnam is expected to fully recover on June 11 as repairs of the two major undersea cables are completed, the Internet Service Provider (ISP) said on June 3.
Repair work on some international undersea cables is unable to be completed as scheduled, and it will take more days for Vietnam’s internet connection with the world to be fully recovered.
