The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has pledged financial provision to assist Cambodia in increasing personnel quality and community adaptation in an effort to mitigate natural disasters.
At a working session in Phnom Penh on April 23, Senior Minister and Vice Chairman of the National Committee for Disaster Management of Cambodia Nhim Vanda and special representative of the UN Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction Margareta Wahlstrom adopted a joint programme on implementing projects in the field with UN aid.
Wahlstrom proposed the Government of Cambodia, as ASEAN Chair, call on regional countries to pay more attention to responding to natural disasters and reducing their consequences.
UNDP together with other ASEAN members, Japan , China and the Republic of Korea have so far provided around 30 million USD in aid to help Cambodia overcome the consequences of last year’s floods.
The floods inundated the country for two months at the end of last year, claimed more than 200 lives, affected 1.4 million people and destroyed hundreds of thousands of hectares of rice./.
