UNESCO recognises Thai gastronomic city

Bangkok (VNA) – Phuket in southern Thailand has been dubbed as a “City of Gastronomy” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Minister of Education cum Chairman of the Thai National Commission for UNESCO Dapong Ratanasuwan said Phuket was selected from 47 cities of 33 member nations to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

This year, Phuket was the only city in Asia to be honoured with the title.

Launched in 2004, the 116-member network aims to foster international cooperation between cities to promote investment in innovative industry for sustainable urban development, social connectivity, and cultural vibrancy.

The network covers seven creative fields: crafts and folk art, design, film, gastronomy, literature, music, and media arts.

Located about 852 kilometers to the south of Bangkok, Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and dubbed the “Pearl of the Andaman Sea”.

It is also one of the most popular destinations in Asia with beautiful beaches and marine-related activities.

In 2014, the nearly-250,000-population island served 12 million tourists, including 8 million from overseas, and earned a tourism revenue of 259 billion baht (7.1 billion USD).-VNA
