Hanoi (VNA) - US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Myanmar’s Nay Pyi Taw on May 22, beginning his brief visit to the ASEAN country.
At his meeting with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, Kerry lauded Myanmar’s progress in its reform, while pledging to continue support for the process.
Kerry’s visit was conducted less than a week after the Obama administration lifted sanctions against 10 state-run companies and banks of Myanmar.
The removal of sanctions aimed to boost US investments in Myanmar, support economic growth and encourage more reforms in the Southeast Asian nation.
The US waived its longstanding bans on investment and trade in 2012 after Myanmar began political and economic reforms, but retained restrictions on dozens of companies and individuals designated by the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control.
Last December, the country also eased trade restrictions on Myanmar by allowing all shipments to go through its ports and airports for six months.-VNA
