Compared to 2024, the strong growth reflected both increased import demand from the US market and the ability of Vietnamese businesses to capitalise on opportunities amid fierce international competition.

Tra fish exports forecast to near 2.2 billion USD

Tra fish output in 2025 is estimated at around 1.67 million tonnes. To date, the sector has contributed approximately 2.1 billion USD to Vietnam’s total agro-forestry-fisheries export earnings.

By exploring new markets, diversifying products and prioritising sustainability standards, Vietnamese aquatic products have laid the groundwork for long-term expansion including early steps to build investment partnerships in emerging markets such as Algeria and Cuba.

CPTPP drives Vietnam’s agro-fisheries exports

The 12-member CPTPP covering Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the UK and Vietnam saw two-way trade with Vietnam reach 102.8 billion in the first 10 months of 2025, up 20.6% from a year earlier.

In 2024, Vietnam boasted over 58 pangasius farms meeting ASC standards, producing more than 210,000 tonnes annually for export to 61 countries. These farms achieve superior efficiency, saving an average of 140 cubic meters of water per tonne of fish, maintaining productivity rates above 70%, and controlling diseases close to 90%

Aquatic exports stay flexible amid rising challenges

Vietnam’s total seafood exports for 2025 are forecast at 9–9.2 billion USD, slightly below the 10 billion USD target, with shrimp at 3.6–3.8 billion USD, pangasius 1.8 billion USD, tuna 850–900 million USD, and other seafood products close to 3 billion USD.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), aquatic product exports reached 3.3 billion USD in the first four months of 2025, a 21% increase compared to the same period last year. Shrimp led the growth with a 30% surge, followed by tra fish (pangasius), which rose by 9%.
