New York (VNA) – Dinh Nho Hung, Deputy Permanent Representative ofthe Vietnam Mission to the United Nations, has affirmed the importance ofsocial protection in dealing with homelessness while attending a UN Commissionfor Social Development session.
Hung represented Vietnam at the 58th session of the commission held in New York from February 10-19 under the theme “Affordablehousing and social protection systems for all to address homelessness”.
He shared that Vietnam has socialprotection policies for people of all age groups, including care centres forthe elderly, orphans and people with disabilities, the “shelter house” modelfor women and children who are victims of domestic violence, and the “peacefulhouse” model for victims of human trafficking.
The Vietnamese representative also spoke ofVietnam’s efforts to cope with climate change as floods, droughts and forestfires can result in homelessness.
During the session, representatives fromother countries also shared their experience in addressing the issue, includingloans to buy affordable houses for low-income earners, housing programmes forthe poorest families, temporary accommodation in emergency situations, andnational strategies to manage and reduce disaster risks./.
