Vietnam scored a 2-1 victory over the host Malaysia on December 7 during the ASEAN Football Federation-Suzuki Cup’s semi-final first leg match in Selangor.
Striker Safiq Rahim of Malaysia opened the score just 13 minutes into the match.
Vietnam’s goals were scored by midfielders Vu Huy Toan at the 32nd minute and Nguyen Van Quyet at the 60th minute.
The two will meet in the second leg of the semifinals at My Dinh stadium, Hanoi, on December 11.
In another semi-final match, the Philippines were unable to break tournament favourites Thailand in Manila on December 6 and ended in a goalless draw.
The Philippines were the first team to book a semi-final spot after opening with a 4-1 win over Laos and then a 4-0 success over Indonesia.
The 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup is co-hosted by Vietnam and Singapore from November 22 to December 20.
