New York (VNA) -  Vietnam is concerned about political tensions and the fact that there are different views among the parties in Cyprus, said Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, on July 21.

He made the statement at a regular consultation of the UN Security Council on the situation in the Republic of Cyprus and the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

The ambassador welcomed the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and Elizabeth Spehar, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Cyprus and head of the UNFICYP, in promoting dialogue and trust-building measures to seek a comprehensive solution to the issue of Cyprus.

He noted some positive developments during the reporting period, including the informal 5 plus 1 meeting chaired by the UN Secretary-General on April 27-29, in Geneva, Switzerland, the reopening of three customs clearance sites, synchronisation of customs clearance regulations in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and regular exchanges between the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and relevant parties.

Vietnam called on the parties involved to exercise restraint and refrain from actions that cause tensions, intensify efforts to promote trust-building, and soon hold another 5 plus 1 informal meeting to create opportunities for the exchange of viewpoints and seek a solution, the ambassador said.

He also emphasised the need to respect the mission of UNFICYP and the importance of relevant UNSC resolutions based on respecting sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference into the internal affairs of Cyprus as well as international law, including the UN Charter.

At the meeting, Spehar, reported on the situation in the country during the first six months of this year,  the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on UNFICYP's activities and trust-building activities between communities as well as efforts to find peace in Cyprus in the past time./.
