Iraq has rescheduled its election on October 10, 2021. (Photo: AFP) Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Permanent Representative ofVietnam to the UN, lauded efforts by the Iraqi government as well as progress made over the past time, but expressed his concern over the security situationin the country.
Regarding the upcoming election in Iraq, Quy said itshould be free and fair, with the widespread participation of people, includingyouths and women, ensured.
The ambassador also called on the international communityto continue realising commitments to supporting Iraq, while fully respecting itspolitical independence, and territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Vietnam welcomed the enhanced cooperation between Iraq andKuwait in searching for Kuwaiti and third-country nationals who went missing inIraq, and returning Kuwaiti property in line with the UNSC’s Resolution 2107,he stressed.
Special Representative and head of the UN Assistance Missionfor Iraq (UNAMI) Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert briefed the meeting on the situationin Iraq, saying apart from economic challenges caused by falling oil prices andCOVID-19, the security environment in Iraq remains complex, with continued terroristattacks on innocent people.
The Iraqi government has made efforts in the COVID-19combat and economic recovery, she said, adding that the country has rescheduledits election on October 10, 2021.
She also provided an update on the operation of theUNAMI to help the Iraqi government and people stabilise the situation and handlethe current difficulties.
Vietnam and other UNSC members noted their concernover the impact of COVID-19 in Iraq and other difficulties facing the country,and called for international support for efforts of the UNAMI as well as UNorganisations./.
