Vietnam's men's Davis Cup tennis team, under the leadership of Australian coach Michael Baroch, have won promotion to Group Two of the Cup's Asia Zone after beating Hong Kong.
Nguyen Hoang Thien played the first match against Ognian Kolev but lost 3-6, 6-3, 1-6, leaving Vietnam with the uphill task of winning the final two matches to prevail.
But luck was on the side of Pham Minh Tuan and Vietnam as King Phillip struggled in the second match. After losing the first set 6-2, Phillip picked up an injury at the start of the second set forcing him to retire.
The country then closed out the double's match as Le Quoc Khanh and Do Minh Quan defeated duo Li Hei Yin and Lam Siu Chuen 6-1, 6-3 to give Vietnam a memorable 2-1 victory in the closely-fought tie.-VNA
