Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam and Laos heldtalks on joint management and protection of the shared border area andpreventing illegal migration in the central province of Nghe An on February 16.

The event was chaired by Lieutenant GeneralHoang Xuan Chien, Commander of the border guard under the Vietnam People’s Armyand Major General Syphane Phuththavong, director of Laos’ border guard forceunder the General Staff of the Lao People’s Army, the Quan doi Nhan dan (People’sArmy) newspaper reported.

Participants said the two sides have closelyworked together in the past to combat crime, especially national securityviolations, drug trafficking, and smuggling.

Vietnamese and Lao border guards have beenimplementing an agreement on the border and border gate management whiledisseminating the outcomes of a project on border marker planting.

The two countries’ defence ministries directedborder guards to work together and hold regular joint patrols along the sharedborder area to ensure security and order.

Both nations have also realised an agreementbetween the two governments on addressing issues related to uncontrolledmigrants and non-registered marriages in border areas.

The border guards were urged to further tightencollaboration to protect the shared border line.-VNA

Vietnam, India enhance defence cooperation

The Deputy Minister suggested that both nations focus on implementing the exchange of delegations, especially high-level ones, and maintaining existing cooperation mechanisms, particularly in training programmes and defence industry collaboration.
