The nation should get ready for the 4G telecommunications revolution, according to director of information and public relations for the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) Bui Quoc Viet.
Viet said 4G technology, which provides faster wireless capability, will be popularised in Vietnam during the next few years. He urged telecom providers to study customer demand for the service and review their plans to roll out the new technology.
Statistics from the VNPT show that telecom provider Mobifone has more than 6 million 3G subscribers, while Vinaphone has more than 2 million. 3G subscribers have accounted for 13 percent of the two enterprises' revenue.
"Our figures show that 80 percent of customers use 3G services at their houses, meaning that mobile subscribers have preferred using broadband services for now," he said.
Orange France Telecom country director Laurent Zylberberg said countries need to carefully plan for upgrading from 3G to 4G.
Vietnam had been a potential market with strong IT growth, he said, adding that Vietnamese people, especially the young, had paid much attention to adopting new technologies.
He said the country had taken firm steps in their integration, thus making Vietnam a strong IT country.
Other broadband service providers including Huawei, NTT Docomo, France Telecom, Orange, Cisco and ZTE have also taken an interest in Vietnam's 4G potential by sharing experiences on the technology's development.
A high-level and panel meeting will be held during the first day of the Vietnam Comm, Vietnam Internet&IT and Vietnam Electronics exhibitions in Hanoi on Nov. 16.
Leading and renowned telecom such as CMC, EVN, FPT, GTEL, Hutchison Global Communications, Intel, SPT, National Academy of Public Administration, Vietnam Mobile, Vietnam Airline's subsidiary – Tan Son Nhat International Airport Ground Services (TIAGS) and Viettel have registered to visit the show.
A summit has also been held for industry players to discuss the industry's hottest issues including the application of telecommunications and IT in various industries and cloud computing.
The events gather pavilions from mainland China and Taiwan and over 140 exhibitors from 15 countries to showcase their latest ICT and electronics technologies./.
