Vietnam second in ASEAN for percentage of women in parliament

Women account for 24.4 percent of the total deputies in the Vietnamese National Assembly (NA), ranking only after Laos in the Association of Southeast Asia Nations ( ASE AN), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) reports.

According to the UNDP’s latest Human Development Report themed “The rise of the South: Human Progress in a Diverse World”, the top 10 countries with highest percentage of women in parliament include Rwanda (51.9 percent), Andorra, Cuba, Sweden, the Seychelles, Senegal, South Africa, Nicaragua and Iceland.

In terms of the gender inequality index, Vietnam is ranked at 48th globally, while Singapore is at the 13 th position and Malaysia at 48th.-VNA
