Vietnam to actively contribute to Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games: diplomat

Vietnam will make positive contributions to the successful organisation of the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing 2022, said Nguyen Phuong Tra, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN).

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam will make positive contributions to the successfulorganisation of the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing 2022, said Nguyen Phuong Tra, Deputy Permanent Representative ofVietnam to the United Nations (UN).

The Vietnamesediplomat made the affirmation during a meeting of the UN General Assembly onDecember 2 where the General Assembly adopted a resolutionentitled “Sport for development and peace:  Building a peaceful and betterworld through sport and the Olympic ideal”.

Sheemphasised the importance of sport, expressing her belief that sport can createpositive social changes, thus contributing to peace and development.

TheOlympics is the most important global sporting event that helps promote peaceand development, the diplomat said, adding that the Olympic spirit is the commonaspiration of the people around the world for friendship, peace and exchange amongnations, as well as integration of civilizations.  

Shetook the occasion to announce that Vietnam will host the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEAGames 31) in 2022, which is expected to promote solidarity and friendship among SoutheastAsian nations.

Theresolution, which is reviewed by the UN General Assembly every two years, highlightsthe positive contribution of sport to promoting education, sustainabledevelopment, peace and cooperation.

It promotes solidarity, equity and social integration at all levels oflocality, region and globe.  This is alsothe foundation for the organisation of Olympic Games.

The drafting of this resolutionwas chaired by China, officially starting its hosting of the WinterOlympic and Paralympic Games 2022 in Beijing.

The same day, theUN General Assembly also adopted the Resolution “Proclaiming 2022 International Yearof Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development”./.
