The Vietnamese National Assembly and other members of the 122 nd IPU General Assembly spoke with one voice on the need to coordinate actions to eliminate the root causes of conflicts, entailing suppression, poverty, injustice, and discrimination in race, culture and religion.
The 122 nd Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly with the overall theme “Parliament at the Heart of Political Reconciliation and Good Governance” wrapped up in Bangkok , Thailand , on April 1 after six working days. It drew the participation of nearly 1,300 delegates from 131 member countries and international organisations.
Addressing the plenary session, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam National Assembly Uong Chu Luu said the event created a chance for IPU members to assess the results of, and challenges in, joint efforts to solve the causes of wars, conflicts and national separation.
He highlighted good governance as a key and essential task of every single country toward ensuring peace, stability, justice and transparence – which he described as an important factor for promoting parliaments’ role in political reconciliation.
The Vietnamese legislator told the participants that enhancing the capacity of the National Assembly and its deputies in executing their fundamental duties is a key domain in Vietnam ’s national governance reform.
Apart from the main topic, the participants in the 122 nd General Assembly also touched upon international cooperation in sharing responsibilities in fighting terrorism and organised crimes, especially drug trafficking, illegal arms sales, and cross-border terrorism.
They debated the role of legislative bodies in developing the South-South cooperation with the aim of implementing the Millennium Development Goals and youth participation in the democratic process
On the sidelines of the event, the Vietnamese National Assembly delegation met with the IPU President and Secretary General and held bilateral meetings with counterparts from Laos , Cambodia , Belarus , Australia , New Zealand , Russia and Thailand .
The Vietnamese officials attended the meetings of the ASEAN+3 and Asia-Pacific groups and shared the country’s experience on development assistance at a meeting on the theme.
Before the 122 nd IPU General Assembly convened on March 25, Vietnam , as a member representing the Asia-Pacific region in the IPU’s Executive Committee, attended the committee’s meeting where it joined in making decisions on the organisation’s important issues.
In talks with the Vietnam News Agency, Vice National Assembly Chairman Uong Chu Luu affirmed that since joining the IPU Executive Committee, Vietnam has made various contributions and initiatives to the organisation, wining high applause from countries around the world./.
