Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, addresses the session on October 14 (Photo: VNA) Applauding the political, economic,and social strides in Colombia, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, PermanentRepresentative of Vietnam to the UN, voiced support for the peace, security,national reconciliation, reunification, and development process in the country,as well as for the role of the UN Verification Mission.
He asked all relevant parties tocontinue engaging in dialogue in a constructive spirit so as to deal withchallenges and differences during the peace process, especially via themechanisms set up under the peace agreement.
Quy also demanded all partiesinvolved take necessary measures and effectively use mechanisms forguaranteeing security in the protection of civilians, particularly women andchildren.
At the event, speakers said the peaceprocess in Colombia have attained much important progress in terms of politics,security, and economy. They also voiced concern about the continued attacks onand violence against veterans, the black, women, and indigenous people,particularly in rural areas.
They urged the Colombian Governmentto keep promoting the political process, protect vulnerable groups, and carryout election-related initiatives to organise democratic and peaceful electionsin 2022.
Membersof the Security Council highlighted recent advances in the implementation ofthe peace agreement in Colombia but also expressed concern over violent actionsagainst and killings of civilians, especially former soldiers.
Theyemphasised the need to step up measures to prevent activities of illegal armedgroups and ensure safety for vulnerable groups during the reintegrationprocess. They called on the Colombian Government to join relevant parties tocontinue socio-economic development policies assisting people.
Participantsalso voiced support for activities of the UN Verification Mission and theColombian Government during the peace and national reconciliation process./.
