The South East Asian (SEA) Writers Awards 2011 took place in Bangkok on Feb. 16 with the honour presented to Vietnamese writer Nguyen Chi Trung for his book “Tieng khoc cua nang Ut” (The Cry of Ut) and seven other ASEAN writers.
Thai Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, representing the Thai Royal Family presided over the event.
The annual SEA Writers Awards, organised for the first time in 1979 by the Thai Royal Family, the PEN Club of Thailand, the Thai Writers Association and Thai Airways, aims to discover and spotlight leading literary talent in the region.
Set in the central province of Quang Ngai during the period 1954-1959, “ Tieng Khoc Cua Nang Ut ” describes one of the world’s most bitterly fought wars, as he recounts his experiences during the American War.
The book, Trung’s first novel, also won the Vietnam Writers Association awards in 2008.
Born on Feb. 15, 1930 in Hoa Phuoc, in central Quang Nam province, Nguyen Chi Trung was a major-general in the army and the deputy editor-in-chief of Van Nghe Quan Doi , the Military’s Arts and Literature magazine./.
