A delegation from the Saigon New Port Corporation (SNP), the country’s largest container terminal services provider, on July 27 had a meeting in Cairo with representatives from leading Egyptian businesses in logistics and freight forwarding.
The event was part of the delegation’s tour to Europe, Africa and the Middle East to seek cooperation opportunities in these fields.
Speaking at the Cairo meeting, Vietnamese Chargé d’Affaires in Egypt Nguyen Hong Son said that Vietnam and Egypt hold great potential in developing logistics and freight forwarding as they both are located at important geo-economic positions in their respective regions.
Representatives from more than 20 members of the Egyptian International Freight Forwarding Association said they are interested in business ties with the SNP to provide package services for the two countries’ export-import enterprises.
Several stated that they will visit Vietnam soon to learn about the corporation’s infrastructure and services.
Established in 1989, SNP now runs14 ports and two inland container depots across Vietnam with total assets estimated at over 30 trillion VND (more than 1.4 billion USD). Of which, the Tan Cang-Cat Lai port enters the world’s 34 largest and most modern container terminals.
The corporation now holds almost 50 percent of the container transport market in Vietnam and 85 percent of the southern region market alone. With an average annual growth of 21.9 percent, SNP’s revenue hit 7.9 trillion VND (376 million USD).
SNP General Director Nguyen Dang Nghiem said that the corporation has been working with Japan’s Molnykit company to implement the Lach Huyen international container port project worth 321 million USD in northern Hai Phong city. Once completed in 2017, the first deep-water container port in the north can welcome ships of up to 100,000 deadweight tonnages, he added.-VNA
