Vietnamese karate athletes shine at Asian youth champs

- Vietnam returned home with two gold medals from the 15th Asian Karate Federation Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships 2016, which closed in Indonesia on November 27.

Nguyen Thanh Truong won his gold in the men’s U70kg event and Nguyen Thi Ngoan triumphed in the women’s U61kg category.

Vietnamese athlete Nguyen Anh Nguyet pocketed a silver medal in the women’s U54kg event, while Nguyen Thi Viet Trinh came second in the women’s U68kg competition.

Kata (performance) competitors also entered the top three list, with three bronze medals – Tran Thi Khanh Vi in the women’s U50kg; Thai Thanh Bich Ngoc in the women’s U47kg; and Le Thi Khanh Ly in the women’s kata category.

Vietnam ranked fifth in the medal tally. Japan, home to martial art, bagged 20 titles to claim the top position.

Karate has been added to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Vietnam expect to send both kumite and kata athletes to Tokyo. According to the rules, each continent will have 10 representatives to the Olympics.-VNA
