The third Vovinam (Vietnamese martial arts) world championships opened in Paris on July 5, as part of activities to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Vietnam-France diplomatic ties.

The contest, which is being held overseas for the first time, has attracted over 230 martial artists from 24 countries. It shows the attraction and strong development of Vovinam after its introduction 75 years ago.

The World Vovinam Federation executive committee will also organise its meeting during the event.

Vovinam was brought to France in 1971 by overseas Vietnamese students in the country, before spreading across Europe.

According to Francis Didier, President of the French Federation of Karate and Associated Martial Arts, of all the Vietnamese martial arts, Vovinam has attracted the greatest number of learners over the last 70 years.

Within the framework of the championships, which will run until July 7 during “Vovinam Days in France”, many other activities such as performances and exhibitions featuring typical Vovinam weapons will also be held.-VNA
