Vietnam’s top chess player Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son bagged a silver medal at the Young Grandmaster Tournament as part of the 43 rd Biel International Chess Festival, which concluded in Switzerland on July 29.

Son, (elo 2617), who now ranks 14 th among the world’s young players, gained victories over Russia ’s Evgeny Tomashevsky (elo 2708, the world’s 33 rd ) and Anish Firi (elo 2672, the world’s 62 nd ) from the Netherlands to enter the final round with 5.5 points.

However, he lost the gold medal after being defeated by Italian rival Fabiano Caruana (elo 2697, the world’s 39 th ).

Two other Asian players, Wesley So (elo 2674, the world’s 60 th ) from the Philippines got 4.5 points, ranking fifth, and India’s Parimarjan Begi (elo 2615, the 17 th among the world’s young players) took the tenth place with 2.5 points./.
