Vietnam is making every effort in implementing the UNESCO’s Convention for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage, which demonstrates its strong commitment to preserving and upholding the country’s heritage, Sun Lei, a representative of the UNESCO Office in Vietnam has said.
Sun Lei was speaking at a seminar held by the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO in Hanoi on July 24 to review the country’s decade-long implementation of the Convention.
Vietnam has provided an example of how culture plays the role as a driving force for sustainable development, the UNESCO official said.
Addressing the event, the General Secretary of Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, Pham Cao Phong described intangible cultural heritage as an important factor in preserving cultural diversity amid the rapid globalisation.
With seven UNSECO-recognised intangible cultural heritage examples, Vietnam has more opportunities to introduce its culture to the world, while making use of it to promote tourism, significantly contributing to localities’ socio-economic development, he noted.
Participant at the seminar pointed to shortcomings in the implementation of the Convention over the past decade and propose measures to deal with such problems. They also shared experience and discussed how to increase cooperation between relevant sectors in this field.-VNA
