VN exports 1.85 million tonnes of rice in first quarter

Vietnam exported 1.85 million tonnes of rice in the first three months of this year, earning 884 million USD, according to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA).

The VFA reported that farmers in the Mekong delta, Vietnam ’s largestrice bowl, had harvested over 6.37 million tonnes of paddy on 965,000ha from the 2010-2011 winter-spring crop with an average yield being 6.6tonnes per hectare.

Mekong delta farmers expect to harvest a total of 10 million tonnes of paddy from this winter-spring crop.

Atpresent, the country now has nearly 4.1 million ha under ricecultivation. The rice farming area is estimated to drop by 5,700 ha by2020 and 19,000 ha by 2030 due to climate change impacts./.
