The 15th day of the 7th lunar month is known as Vu Lan festival which is dedicated to both parents who living and those who have passed away. This year the festival falls on August 15.

During the Vu Lan festival, Lan Anh’s family in Tu Liem district, Hanoi prepare offerings and votives, which look exactly like real things in daily life to pay respect to her parents and ancestors.

Vu Lan festival is celebrated by Vietnamese people participating in various religious rituals and humanitarian activities. It is an occasion for them to express their gratitude towards their parents.

Many people go to pagoda on this occasion, wearing either a red rose if their parents are alive or a white rose if their parents have passed away.

However, a lot of votive offerings alone do not mean respect. Instead, people should take better care of their parents who are still alive.-VNA
