The Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) and the International Labour Organisation is co-hosting a workshop in Hanoi to seek ways to help people with disabilities find employment.
The participants to the two-day workshop shared the view that it is difficult to train people with disabilities in the occupations that suit their physical condition.
Also, they agreed that there is an absence of trainers qualified to teach the disabled the necessary skills, making it hard for them to land the job they want.
According to the Vice President and Secretary General of War Invalids and the Disabled Running Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Dang Van Thanh, it is still a problem for the disabled to find jobs.
Though the State has issued a system of legal documents relating to employment of the disabled, many employers have been neglectful in the matter, Thanh said.
The participants agreed on the need to raise public awareness on issues concerning people with disabilities, especially their right to employment.
The disabled should be equipped with accounting skills and IT knowledge to increase their chances of employment, the participants said.
They also noted the necessity for vocational training schools and job placement centres to join hands with enterprises in training so as to enable trainees to soon get jobs they were trained.
Over 5.4 million people in Vietnam , or 6.34 percent of the population, are living with disabilities.
According to statistics of the Social Welfare Department under the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, 36 percent of the disabled in Vietnam are illiterate, 25 percent are employed, between 65-70 percent are living off support from their families, and over 30 percent are living in poverty./.
