Xoe Thai accredited as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

The art of Xoe dance of the Thai ethnic people in Vietnam was listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the 16th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which is taking place from December 13-18.

According to UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee, the art form meets all five criteria set by UNESCO.

Xoe Thai is a unique type of traditional dance associated with the daily life of Thai ethnic communities in the northwest of Vietnam and plays a significant role in their lives.

There are some 30 Xoe dances, but Xoe dance with a fan, a scarf or a conical hat are the three most popular, reflecting community activities and expressing the Thai people’s emotions.

Xoe Thai is Vietnam’s 14th intangible cultural heritage recognised by UNESCO and the fifth to secure recognition from the body this year./.
