Indonesia strengthens security ahead of New Year
Hanoi (VNA) – The Indonesian police on December 27 said that they have enhanced security
at airports, seaports and wharves ahead of the New Year 2017 after a series of
raids across the country and arrested many suspects.
In raids on several
dens of terrorist suspects at the two major islands Java and Sumatra in past
few weeks, the anti-terrorist police seized materials and evidence showing that
gunmen may carry out attacks on Christmas and New Year holidays
The national
police’s spokesperson Martinus Sitompul said police have been deployed to many
important places where crowds often gather and tourism sites while closely
monitoring situation on the eve of the New Year.
Earlier, the
police foiled many suicide bomb schemes planned for Christmas Day. The latest was
on December 26 when the police razed a group linked to the terrorist group
Islamic State (IS) planned to attack a police station in West Java on the New
