Re-enactment of Doan Ngo Festival waxes nostalgic

An ancient ritual was recently re-enacted at the Thang Long Imperial Citadel in Hanoi as part of celebrations of the Doan Ngo Festival, which takes place on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

The ritual was organised to honour and promote the traditional practice of “killing pests and worms”. Highlights included food and incense offering, and a fan-giving ritual.

During the Later Le Dynasty, emperors hosted a ritual to present fans to mandarins. With hot weather guaranteed during the Doan Ngo Festival, this expressed the emperors’ special care and attention for the mandarins.

On the occasion, the Thang Long Heritage Conservation Centre also organised the “Fans in Life” exhibition.

Though the rituals and customs in the Doan Ngo Festival vary from region to region, it represents an opportunity for everyone to pay tribute to the ancestors.

The Thang Long Heritage Conservation Centre has paid due regard to promoting intangible cultural values. Reenactments have been made of various royal rituals with a view to preserving the Thang Long Imperial Citadel - a UNESCO World Heritage Site./.
