34th ASEAN Summit opened in Bangkok

Bangkok (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc andother ASEAN leaders attended the opening ceremony of the 34th ASEAN Summit inBangkok, Thailand, on June 23.

In his opening remarks, PM Prayut Chan-o-cha ofThailand, which holds the ASEAN Chair in 2019, reviewed the formation anddevelopment of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), noting thatduring this process, the bloc has proved itself as an important factor helpingits members to swiftly recover from and overcome many challenges like financialcrises and natural disasters. 

The ASEAN is now a peaceful region with mutualrespect, he said, noting that a strong and united ASEAN is the main factor toensure stability and development of the region.

With the ASEAN Chairmanship 2019’s theme“Advancing Partnership for Sustainability”, the grouping looks towards thedream of building a community that is sustainable in all the three pillars,oriented towards the people, centres on the people and leaves no one behind.

It also aims to maintain peace, stability and look towardsthe future; capitalise on opportunities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution topromote the digital economy and green growth; enhance relations with partnersto develop sustainably and gain a higher global stature for ASEAN; and step upconnectivity in all fields towards a seamless ASEAN, the Thai PM said.

The host leader added Thailand will continueinheriting the works of the previous ASEAN Chair holding countries whilepromoting concrete initiatives, including those to strengthen security, fosterprosperity and increase people-to-people exchange.

At the opening ceremony, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc andother ASEAN leaders together launched the ASEAN satellite warehouse in Chainatprovince of Thailand under the Disaster Emergency Logistics System for ASEAN.The facility will help with the rapid mobilisation and distribution of reliefitems to disaster-hit areas in the member countries.-VNA

Thailand tightens inspections to curb illegal migrant labour

Thailand’s Deputy Government Spokesperson Aiyarin Phanrit said relevant authorities have also been instructed to conduct strict on-site inspections of migrant workers and their workplaces in order to prevent the use of illegal labour. She added that if illegal work is found, legal action will be taken decisively.
