As many as 444 tonnes of rice have been sent to support households in need of food aid in the central southern coastal province of Phu Yen and those suffering serious damage caused by natural disasters.
The amount is part of the 676 tonnes of rice approved by the Government to support Phu Yen during the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday and the 2014 between-crop period under the decision reached last month.
Previously, Phu Yen’s Labour and Invalids and Social Affairs sector also distributed 232 tonnes of rice to poor people during the holidays.
In 2013, natural disasters badly hit Phu Yen’s agricultural and fishery production, thus making a great number of needy people in the locality fall into extreme hunger.
The 14 th and 15 th storms that swept across the province last year killed two people and destroyed 200 houses. They also submerged 1,432 ha of sugar cane and 340 ha of rice, causing an estimated economic loss of about 60 billion VND.-VNA
