54th ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting opens

Phnom Penh (VNA) – The 54th ASEAN EconomicMinisters' Meeting (AEM 54) and related meetings officially opened in SiemReap, Cambodia, on September 14.

Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien led the Vietnamesedelegation to the event.

Opening the AEM 54, Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Senreviewed Cambodia’s engagement in building the common community, especially theASEAN Economic Community, along with the ASEAN efforts and achievements overthe past 30 years, making the association the third largest area in Asia and the sixth in the world in terms of economic scale.

Reviewing common difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic over the pasttwo years, the Cambodian PM underlined that efforts and priorities of the ASEANChair in 2022 is to ensure the efficiency of the association in response to relevant challenges and risks, especially in speeding up the economic recoveryin a sustainable and comprehensive manner.

The ASEAN should pay more attention to the rules-basedtrading system, globalisation principles, multilateral mechanism, the liberalisationof trade and investment in the region, as well as anti-protectionism issues, theenhancement of resilience of regional and global supply chains, logisticsconnection, digital economy building, environmental protection, clean energy,sustainable development, and food security, he held.

The Cambodian leader also reiterated the idea of estabilishing an ASEANgreen agreement that he raised at the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’Meeting last month in Phnom Penh, asserting that the deal with help the regionstep by step head to a sustainable future, efficient energy use, strongadaptation and higher economic competitiveness.

The AEM 54 and related meetings will take place until September 18, focusing onregional growth and post-pandemic economic recovery and trade partnership withleading economies. ASEAN economic chiefs will hold discussion with partners, including those from China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, India,the US, Canada and Russia, as well as others in the framework of theRegional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the East Asia Summit (EAS)

Vietnam calls for stronger ASEAN unity, resilience

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dang Hoang Giang urged ASEAN to make full use of existing mechanisms to enhance dialogue, build trust and prevent risks and conflicts, particularly by strengthening the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ), and cooperation based on international law.

Vietnam steps up trade, investment promotion at China-ASEAN Expo

According to the CAEXPO Secretariat, Vietnam will once again lease an entire exhibition area of about 3,000sq.m, featuring 170 booths, making it one of the ASEAN countries with the largest exhibition spaces at this year’s event. Vietnam reaffirms commitment to building resilient, inclusive and integrated ASEAN Labour Market

To this end, Vietnam proposed three strategic priorities for ASEAN cooperation.
